What fictional Arizona town does Lightning McQueen visit in Pixar’s Cars?

The story behind the answer

Lightning McQueen visits Radiator Springs in Pixar’s Cars.

Radiator Springs is the fictional town where much of the film’s story takes place. Lightning reaches it after accidentally damaging the road and being ordered to repair it. The town’s residents, including Mater, Sally Carrera, Doc Hudson, Ramone, and Flo, gradually teach him to value friendship and community over winning.

The setting was inspired by historic communities along U.S. Route 66. In the film, Radiator Springs suffers after Interstate 40 bypasses the town, diverting travelers and reducing local business. That background reflects the real effects that modern highways had on older roadside settlements.

Cars uses Radiator Springs as more than a backdrop. Lightning begins the film focused almost entirely on the Piston Cup and his own celebrity. His forced stay in town changes his priorities and connects him with the people he initially dismisses. The town returns in Cars 2 and Cars 3, although both sequels broaden the action beyond its desert setting.
