What feature did Genesis say Noah placed near the top of the Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah placed a window near the top of the Ark.

In Genesis 6:16, God’s instructions include making a window for the vessel and finishing it to a specified dimension. The Hebrew wording has generated translation discussion, but English versions commonly describe this feature as a window or opening near the top of the Ark.

The window later becomes important in the story. After the waters begin to recede, Noah opens it and sends out a raven. He then sends a dove several times to test whether the land has become dry. The opening therefore serves both as a practical feature and as part of the narrative’s sequence of observations.

The window is sometimes confused with a door, which Genesis mentions separately. The door is the entrance through which Noah and the animals enter; the window is the upper opening used later to observe conditions outside.
