Christian Science is the central faith-related theme of Metallica’s song “The God That Failed.”

The song was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich for The Black Album, with Hetfield also writing the lyrics. Its subject grew from Hetfield’s anguish over his mother’s death from cancer after she declined medical treatment because of her Christian Science beliefs.

The lyrics examine reliance on faith, the hope of divine healing, and the pain caused when that healing does not occur. The song is therefore rooted in a personal family experience rather than being a general account of Christian Science theology. Interpretations that reduce it to a simple attack on all religion miss the specific biographical context behind the writing.
