The LEGO name comes from the Danish phrase “leg godt,” meaning “play well.”
Ole Kirk Christiansen, who founded the company in Billund, Denmark, adopted LEGO as the company name in 1934. The word was formed from the first letters of the two Danish words, creating a short name that was easy to remember and use internationally.
LEGO later noted that the word also has a meaning in Latin: “I put together” or “I assemble.” That Latin interpretation was not the original reason for choosing the name, but it became an appealing coincidence for a construction-toy company. The company’s famous motto, “Only the best is good enough,” is a separate phrase and is not the meaning of LEGO.
The name therefore refers to the Danish expression rather than directly describing bricks, construction or plastic. The wording is often translated as “play well,” although English translations can vary slightly.
