What does the acronym SPECTRE stand for in the James Bond film series?

The story behind the answer

In the James Bond film series, SPECTRE stands for Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion.

SPECTRE is a powerful international criminal organization created by Ian Fleming for the Bond novels. Its name summarizes the organization’s stated areas of activity and gives the group an ominous identity that fits its role as a global threat to governments and intelligence agencies.

The organization is led by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who appears as its chairman in the earlier films. SPECTRE first appears in the film series in Dr. No, where it is identified as the force behind the assassination and sabotage operation involving Dr. Julius No. It becomes more prominent in From Russia with Love, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice.

The acronym is sometimes mistakenly expanded using words such as “espionage” or “retaliation.” Those alternatives sound plausible but are not the canonical wording. The 2015 film Spectre takes its title directly from the organization and revisits its connection to Bond’s personal history.
