What distinction did Beyoncé achieve at Coachella in 2018?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella in 2018.

Her performance took place at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. The set was widely called “Beychella” and featured a large marching-band concept, extensive choreography, and appearances by Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

The performance drew on historically Black college and university marching-band traditions, including brass arrangements, drum lines, majorette-style movement, and Greek-letter imagery. It was both a major festival appearance and a celebration of Black musical institutions.

Beyoncé’s headline set was later released as the subject of the Netflix documentary Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé. The distinction is specifically about being the first Black woman to headline Coachella, not the first woman or first Black performer to headline the festival.
