What did the dove bring back to Noah’s Ark to show that waters had receded?

The story behind the answer

The dove brought an olive leaf back to Noah’s Ark as evidence that the floodwaters had receded.

Genesis says Noah sent the dove out again after an earlier flight. In the evening, the bird returned with a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak. Noah understood this as a sign that the waters had diminished from the earth and that vegetation was visible again.

The olive leaf became one of the most recognizable images associated with the ark story. It is often represented as a branch, although the biblical wording specifically describes a leaf. In later culture, the olive branch developed broader associations with peace and reconciliation, partly because of this powerful image.

The bird’s return was not the final test of dry land. Noah sent the dove out once more, and it did not return. That final absence indicated that the bird had found a place to live outside the ark.
