What did Noah first send from the Ark to test whether the waters had receded?

The story behind the answer

Noah first sent a raven from the Ark to test whether the waters had receded.

Genesis 8:7 says Noah sent out a raven after the ark came to rest and the waters began to decrease. The raven flew back and forth until the waters dried from the earth. Noah then sent a dove on separate occasions to look for evidence of dry land.

The raven and the dove have different roles in the sequence. The raven is sent first, while the dove later returns with an olive leaf and eventually does not return, showing that the land is becoming habitable.

This question concerns the order of the birds in Genesis, not a general identification of the most famous bird in the story. The olive leaf is associated with the dove’s later report, but it was not the first test Noah made.
