What did Noah do immediately after leaving the Ark, before planting a vineyard?

The story behind the answer

Immediately after leaving the Ark, Noah built an altar. Genesis 8:20 says Noah built an altar to the Lord and offered burnt offerings from every clean animal and every clean bird.

This act comes before Genesis describes Noah planting a vineyard. The sequence is significant within the narrative: Noah leaves the ark, establishes an altar, makes offerings, receives God’s covenant, and later begins agricultural work. The altar is therefore the first action specifically recorded after the family and animals leave the vessel.

The passage also explains why Genesis earlier distinguishes clean animals and birds from other animals. Noah’s sacrifice uses clean creatures, linking the earlier animal instructions with this post-flood ceremony.

The altar should not be confused with the ark itself or with a structure Noah builds for shelter. Genesis does not say that Noah constructed a new city, temple, or house at this point. It identifies one religious structure and one offering before the later vineyard episode.
