What currency is issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka?
Answer
Sri Lankan rupee
Answer
Sri Lankan rupee
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka issues the Sri Lankan rupee.
The rupee became the currency of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, during the nineteenth century under British colonial rule. It replaced the rixdollar as the principal monetary unit and followed the wider regional use of rupee-based money. After Ceylon became independent in 1948, the currency continued under its national name.
The Central Bank of Ceylon began operations in 1950 and was later renamed the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. One rupee is divided into 100 cents, although cents are rarely used in modern cash transactions. The Sri Lankan rupee is separate from the Indian rupee, Pakistani rupee, and other rupees despite their shared historical word and symbol family.
