What currency did Azerbaijan introduce in 2006 after redenominating the old manat?

The story behind the answer

Azerbaijan introduced the new Azerbaijani manat in 2006 after redenominating the old manat.

The redenomination removed four zeros: 5,000 old manats became one new manat. The new currency entered circulation on 1 January 2006, while the old and new notes circulated together during a transition period.

The manat had first been introduced after Azerbaijan became independent from the Soviet Union, but the original currency was affected by high inflation and changing exchange values. The redesign also used modern security features and imagery connected with Azerbaijani history and culture.

The new manat’s ISO 4217 code is AZN. It is different from Turkmenistan’s manat and from Turkey’s lira, despite the regional use of related monetary names.
