What color is the dragon on Wales's flag?
Answer
Red
Answer
Red
The dragon on Wales’s flag is red: Y Ddraig Goch, meaning “the Red Dragon,” stands on a green-and-white field.
The dragon is one of Wales’s oldest national symbols. In the medieval Historia Brittonum, a red dragon representing the Britons battles and defeats a white dragon associated with the invading Saxons. The tale places the struggle at Dinas Emrys and helped connect the creature with Welsh identity and resistance.
Henry Tudor used the red dragon during his campaign against Richard III and carried the standard in triumph to St Paul’s Cathedral after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. Green and white, meanwhile, became associated with the Tudor family and form the flag’s two horizontal background fields.
The modern flag was officially recognised in 1959. Its precise heraldic drawing is not fixed by law, so versions can differ in details such as the dragon’s posture or claws. Those variations do not alter its defining color.
