What color cross appears on Denmark's red national flag?

The story behind the answer

Denmark’s red national flag carries a white Nordic cross. Known as the Dannebrog, it has a cross that reaches the flag’s edges, with its vertical arm shifted toward the hoist.

The cross is a defining feature of Nordic flags and is traditionally associated with Christianity. Denmark’s banner is among the oldest national flag designs still in continuous use. A medieval origin legend says it fell from the sky during the Battle of Lindanise in 1219, though historians distinguish that story from the surviving documentary evidence.

A white-on-red cross is attested in connection with Danish kings by the fourteenth century. The flag became widely established as Denmark’s national banner in the early sixteenth century, and its construction was formally regulated in the eighteenth century.

People often confuse the Danish design with the flags of Norway, Sweden, Finland, or Iceland, which use the same shifted-cross pattern in different colour combinations. Denmark’s red field and white cross are the essential identifiers.
