What city did The Doors call home?

The story behind the answer

The Doors called Los Angeles home. The band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965, when UCLA film students Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek began developing music together.

Los Angeles shaped both the group’s identity and its early career. The Doors built their reputation in clubs on the Sunset Strip, including the London Fog and the Whisky a Go Go. Their sound emerged from the city’s mixture of rock, blues, jazz, poetry, nightlife, and counterculture, while Morrison’s lyrics often carried the atmosphere of Southern California’s beaches, streets, and desert surroundings.

The band’s classic lineup consisted of Morrison, keyboardist Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. Their Los Angeles origins are sometimes blurred with San Francisco because both cities were major centers of 1960s psychedelic music, but The Doors were specifically an L.A. band.

The group later recorded and performed internationally, yet Los Angeles remained central to its story. Even the title L.A. Woman directly evoked the city that had launched their career.
