What brand of organ did Ray Manzarek primarily use with The Doors?

The story behind the answer

Ray Manzarek primarily used a Vox Continental organ with The Doors.

The Vox Continental was a compact combo organ strongly associated with 1960s psychedelic and garage rock. Manzarek’s bright, penetrating tone became one of The Doors’ defining sounds, especially on songs such as “Light My Fire” and “Touch Me.”

Because The Doors had no regular live bass guitarist, Manzarek also played bass lines with his left hand on a Fender Rhodes piano bass while using keyboard instruments for the band’s harmonic and melodic parts. That arrangement helped create the group’s distinctive full sound without a traditional bassist.

A common mix-up is confusing the Vox Continental with Manzarek’s other keyboards. He later used a Gibson G-101 Kalamazoo combo organ, and the Fender Rhodes was important for bass parts, but the Vox Continental was his signature organ.
