A dove returned to Noah with a freshly plucked olive leaf after leaving the Ark.
Genesis 8 describes Noah sending birds through the Ark’s window to discover whether the floodwaters had receded. He first sent a raven, which flew back and forth. Noah then sent a dove, but it initially found no place to rest and returned to him.
After waiting seven days, Noah sent the dove again. It came back in the evening carrying a freshly plucked olive leaf, showing that vegetation had reappeared above the waters. A final release of the dove produced no return, indicating that the land was becoming habitable.
The raven and the dove are therefore both part of the episode, but the olive leaf is specifically associated with the dove. This scene later helped make the dove and olive branch widely recognized symbols of peace and hope.
