What are the three paths connecting the two bases in Dota 2 called?

The story behind the answer

The three paths connecting Dota 2’s two bases are called lanes.

The Radiant and Dire bases sit at opposite corners of the map, with the battlefield organized around three routes: the top, middle, and bottom lanes. Each lane leads toward the opposing Ancient and is protected by defensive towers. Computer-controlled lane creeps regularly travel these routes, creating the main front lines where heroes gather experience, earn gold, and contest enemy buildings.

The word “lane” comes from the game’s Defense of the Ancients heritage and is standard MOBA terminology. Players often shorten the names to “top,” “mid,” and “bot,” though which side is considered the safe or off lane depends on the team and map geometry. The lanes are not simply roads: they are strategic zones shaped by tower positions, creep-wave meeting points, terrain, vision, and nearby jungle entrances.

A common mix-up is confusing lanes with barracks. Barracks are buildings inside each base that produce lane creeps; they are not routes. The river divides the map, while the lanes connect the bases across it.
