What animal is Momo?

Momo is a winged lemur. He is a small, highly intelligent animal companion who joins Aang, Katara, and Sokka after they encounter him at the abandoned Southern Air Temple.

Momo’s species is connected to the Air Nomads, whose temples once housed flying lemurs as familiar animals and companions. Although he is not a bender, Momo’s agility, hearing, curiosity, and ability to fly make him useful during the group’s travels. He also becomes one of the show’s main sources of comic relief.

Momo is often mistakenly called a monkey because of his size, expressive face, and climbing behavior. He is not a bat either: his large ears and gliding wings can create that impression, but his fictional species is specifically a winged lemur. Appa, by contrast, is the group’s much larger flying bison and primary mode of transportation.
