A snake appears as the subtle outline on the cover of Metallica’s The Black Album.
The cover is predominantly black, with the Metallica logo in the upper-left area and a grayish snake outline near the lower-right portion. The restrained design is the reason the album is widely known as The Black Album, even though its official title is simply Metallica.
The snake is easy to miss because it is intentionally low-contrast rather than brightly illustrated. That minimal presentation differs from the more overt artwork on several of Metallica’s earlier albums, whose covers used stronger imagery and color. The subtle emblem became one of the record’s most recognizable visual details.
The cover should not be confused with the album’s songs or lyrics: the snake is a design element, while “Enter Sandman” includes separate nightmare imagery involving childhood fears. Both details contribute to the album’s dark visual and thematic identity.
