McDonald’s launched the fictional advertising world McDonaldland in 1971.
McDonaldland presented McDonald’s products and restaurants through a colorful fantasy setting populated by food-themed characters. Mayor McCheese, Officer Big Mac, the Hamburglar, and other figures appeared in television commercials, packaging, playgrounds, and promotional materials.
The campaign was designed especially to make the brand appealing and memorable to children. Each character had a recognizable visual identity and a role within the fictional community. The characters helped McDonald’s connect menu items with a larger story world rather than treating the restaurant as only a place to buy food.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with individual character debuts. The world itself was introduced in 1971, while some characters appeared or changed form at different times. The campaign also became the subject of a 1973 legal dispute involving the creators of the children’s program H.R. Pufnstuf.
