McDonald’s introduced the advertising slogan “I’m lovin’ it” globally in 2003.
The campaign began internationally in September 2003 and was designed to create a consistent McDonald’s message across markets. The phrase used informal, conversational language and was paired with a distinctive audio mnemonic in advertisements. Its lowercase styling and apostrophes became part of the campaign’s recognizable presentation.
The launch is sometimes confused with the song associated with the campaign. The advertising phrase was created for McDonald’s, while the accompanying track was performed by Justin Timberlake and produced with contributions from The Neptunes. The campaign therefore involved both a corporate slogan and a music-led advertising package.
“I’m lovin’ it” replaced earlier McDonald’s slogans in many markets, but local advertising could still contain market-specific adaptations. Its longevity made it one of the company’s most important modern branding elements.
