What 53-track album celebrated the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

The Metallica Blacklist was the 53-track album released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s The Black Album.

Released on September 10, 2021, The Metallica Blacklist collected cover versions of songs from the 1991 album. More than 50 artists contributed interpretations in different styles, making the project broader than a conventional tribute record by a single act.

The compilation included artists from rock, pop, hip-hop, country, and other musical backgrounds. Each contributor selected and reworked a Black Album song, showing how widely Metallica’s material had traveled beyond the original heavy-metal audience.

The project was tied to a larger 30th-anniversary campaign that also included a remastered edition and an expanded box set of Metallica. Profits from The Metallica Blacklist were directed to Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation and charities chosen by participating artists. It is distinct from the original 12-track album and from the archival recordings in the anniversary box set.
