Georgia O'Keeffe’s 1932 painting featuring a large white flower with a dark center is Jimson Weed.
The full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1. O'Keeffe painted the work in 1932, enlarging a jimson weed flower so that its trumpet-shaped form fills nearly the entire canvas. The close-up view is characteristic of her flower paintings.
The flower grew at O'Keeffe’s New Mexico home, and she often used nearby natural forms as subjects. She later explained that magnifying flowers allowed viewers to notice details that they might otherwise overlook.
Jimson Weed became especially famous after being sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, including fees. It briefly held the auction record for the most expensive painting by a female artist. That record has since changed, but the painting remains one of O'Keeffe’s best-known works.
