The Obelisco de Buenos Aires stands in which South American capital?
Answer
Buenos Aires
Answer
Buenos Aires
The Obelisco de Buenos Aires stands in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital.
The monument rises in Plaza de la República, at the intersection of Avenida Corrientes and Avenida 9 de Julio. Architect Alberto Prebisch designed it as a symbol of the city, and it was inaugurated on 23 May 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Buenos Aires's first foundation.
The reinforced-concrete obelisk was built remarkably quickly: construction began on 20 March 1936 and the work was completed in about 31 days. It is commonly described as 67.5 meters tall and has a single entrance and four small windows near its summit.
The site also carries an older piece of Argentine history. A church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari once stood there, and the Argentine flag was officially raised on its tower in Buenos Aires in 1812. The Obelisk is therefore more than a city landmark: its location connects the modern capital with an important national episode. Caracas, Bogotá, and Quito have prominent monuments, but none is the Obelisco de Buenos Aires.
