The Milk Tea Alliance hashtag movement originally started as an internet meme.
The phrase emerged online in 2020 after social-media disputes involving Thai users, Taiwanese users and Hong Kong supporters, alongside opposition to Chinese nationalist commentators. The name refers to the shared popularity of milk tea and related drinks in places including Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan, turning a regional cultural connection into a visual and political symbol.
Early posts used memes and comparative images to mock or answer online nationalist attacks. The idea soon moved beyond humor: users began using the hashtag to express solidarity with democracy movements and resistance to authoritarianism across Asia.
The alliance is not a formal organization with membership rules or a central leadership. It has been described as a loose, transnational network of netizens. Myanmar became especially prominent after the February 2021 military coup, while India was sometimes included through masala chai. A common mistake is to treat the Milk Tea Alliance as a government coalition; it began as an online meme and developed into a decentralized protest movement.
