#MuteRKelly became especially prominent after which 2019 documentary series aired?

The story behind the answer

#MuteRKelly became especially prominent after the 2019 documentary series Surviving R. Kelly aired. The Lifetime series investigated numerous allegations of sexual abuse and coercive behavior involving singer R. Kelly through interviews with alleged survivors, relatives, journalists, and other figures.

The first season aired over three nights, from 3 to 5 January 2019. Its release gave the existing #MuteRKelly campaign much wider attention and helped turn calls for a boycott of Kelly’s music into a major public debate. Musicians, radio stations, streaming platforms, and record-industry figures faced pressure to distance themselves from him or reconsider collaborations.

The documentary did not invent the hashtag: #MuteRKelly had circulated before the series, as activists had already been urging broadcasters and listeners to stop supporting Kelly. What changed was the scale of public awareness after the program aired. The series was followed by further legal and cultural consequences, including Kelly’s 2019 criminal charges and the later termination of his RCA Records relationship. The similarly titled documentaries in the options are unrelated.
