The Guaire River flows through which South American capital?

The story behind the answer

The Guaire River flows through which South American capital? Caracas.

The Guaire River flows through Caracas, Venezuela, the capital situated in a long valley between the Coastal Range and the Ávila mountain system. It is the city’s principal river and runs generally from west to east before continuing toward the Tuy River in Miranda State.

The river is about 72 kilometers long. It begins at Las Adjuntas, where the San Pedro and Macarao rivers meet, then crosses the Caracas valley and passes through heavily urbanized areas. Its basin covers roughly 655 square kilometers, linking much of the metropolitan valley’s drainage system.

The Guaire was once an important watercourse for Caracas, but urban growth and nineteenth-century sanitation decisions turned it into a major conduit for wastewater. Much of the river through the city is channelized to reduce flooding. A common mix-up is identifying the Tuy River as Caracas’s main river: the Guaire is a tributary of the Tuy, not the other way around. The river’s name therefore points directly to Caracas’s geography and environmental history.
