The Chao Phraya River flows through the capital of which Asian country?

The story behind the answer

The Chao Phraya River flows through the capital of Thailand.

The river runs through Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, before emptying into the Gulf of Thailand. It is the country’s principal river and forms the central lowland that has supported farming, settlement, trade, and political power for centuries.

The modern river begins at Nakhon Sawan, where the Ping and Nan rivers meet, and then flows south for about 372 kilometers. Bangkok grew on its banks after becoming the capital of the Rattanakosin Kingdom in 1782. The river helped defend the city and provided a natural transport route.

The Chao Phraya is more than a geographic landmark: river buses, ferries, cargo vessels, and water taxis still operate in Bangkok. A common mistake is to associate it with neighboring Myanmar, Laos, or Cambodia because many major mainland Southeast Asian rivers cross national borders. The Chao Phraya, however, is principally a Thai river, with its basin and mouth located in Thailand.
