The 1979 Glastonbury event was held for which international observance?

The story behind the answer

The 1979 Glastonbury event was held for the Year of the Child.

Glastonbury Fayre returned as a planned three-day event from 21 to 23 June 1979, after the festival’s revival by Arabella Churchill, Thomas Crimble, Andrew Kerr and Michael Eavis. Its theme reflected the United Nations’ designation of 1979 as the International Year of the Child, making children’s welfare and creativity central to the occasion.

Arabella Churchill helped establish dedicated children’s and theatre areas, as well as circus and cabaret spaces. The event welcomed about 12,000 festival-goers, but it lost money. The children’s work had a lasting legacy: Churchill later founded Children’s World, a charity supporting creative, educational and drama activities for children in south-west England.

The event is sometimes confused with the festival’s 1978 impromptu gathering, but the Year of the Child association belongs to the organised 1979 revival.
