Suva's hilly peninsula lies between Suva Harbour and which bay?
Answer
Laucala Bay
Answer
Laucala Bay
Suva’s hilly peninsula lies between Suva Harbour and Laucala Bay.
Suva occupies the southeastern corner of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. The city’s peninsula projects into a coastal lagoon system, with Suva Harbour on one side and Laucala Bay on the other. The two waters are connected by the narrow Nasese Channel, so the geography is more intricate than a simple open-ocean shoreline.
The setting also helps explain Suva’s famously wet climate. Mountains to the north and west intercept the southeast trade winds, bringing abundant moisture. Although the city is nearly surrounded by water, much of its coast is lined with mangroves rather than sandy beaches. Parts of central Suva, including the Parliament area, were built on reclaimed mangrove swampland.
Laucala Bay is also associated with the Rewa River, Fiji’s longest river, whose delta lies east of the bay. That combination of harbour, bay, reefs and channels forms the broader Suva Lagoon environment.
