#StopAsianHate began in which country in 2021?

The story behind the answer

#StopAsianHate began in the United States in 2021.

The slogan became the name of a large protest and awareness movement responding to anti-Asian racism and violence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its rapid growth followed years of discrimination, including racist rhetoric connected to the pandemic and a rise in reported attacks against Asian Americans.

The movement gained especially wide attention in March 2021 after the killings at three Atlanta-area spas, where eight people died, including six women of Asian descent. Vigils, marches and rallies then took place across the United States, with participants demanding an end to anti-Asian hate crimes and greater protection for Asian American and Pacific Islander communities.

Although the phrase spread internationally and was used in solidarity campaigns elsewhere, the movement’s recognized origin in this form is American. That is why Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are not the canonical answers to this question. The wording also refers to a broader movement rather than one single organization or event.
