South Tarawa’s population centre runs westward to the islet of Betio.
South Tarawa is an almost continuous urban settlement spread across a chain of narrow islets in Kiribati’s Tarawa Atoll. Its population centre extends from Betio at the western end toward Bonriki and Tanaea in the northeast, with the settlements linked by the South Tarawa main road and causeways.
Betio is more than a geographic endpoint. It contains Kiribati’s principal port and was the site of the Battle of Tarawa during the Pacific War. Bairiki, farther east, is the country’s governmental centre, while Bonriki contains the international airport area and forms part of the eastern urban stretch.
The wording can cause confusion because Ambo and Bairiki are also important South Tarawa settlements. They lie within the same connected population corridor, but Betio is the westernmost islet named in the description. South Tarawa’s narrow land base and rapid population growth have also made overcrowding, freshwater and coastal erosion major concerns.
