Sokka and Katara are teenagers from which Water Tribe?

The story behind the answer

Sokka and Katara are teenagers from the Southern Water Tribe. They live in a small settlement near the South Pole when they discover Aang frozen in an iceberg and become his first traveling companions.

The Southern Water Tribe is one of the two main Water Tribe societies in the Avatar world, alongside the Northern Water Tribe. Its people traditionally live in polar regions and include waterbenders, although the southern community has been severely weakened by repeated Fire Nation raids. Katara is the village’s only known waterbender at the beginning of the story.

The siblings’ roles differ sharply. Katara is a waterbender who becomes a skilled healer and master, while Sokka cannot bend but develops into a warrior, engineer, and strategist. A frequent mix-up is choosing the Northern Water Tribe because the group later travels there to study waterbending and defend the North. The Foggy Swamp Tribe is another waterbending culture, but it is separate from Sokka and Katara’s homeland.
