Papeete is administrative capital of which French Polynesian island subdivision?
Answer
Windward Islands
Answer
Windward Islands
Papeete is the administrative capital of French Polynesia’s Windward Islands subdivision.
The Windward Islands, or Îles du Vent, form the eastern part of the Society Islands. The group includes Tahiti, Moorea, Mehetia, Tetiaroa, and Maiao, with Papeete serving as its administrative capital on Tahiti. Papeete is also the capital of French Polynesia as a whole, which can make the two levels of administration easy to confuse.
The Leeward Islands are the Society Islands’ separate western group and include Raiatea, Tahaʻa, Bora Bora, and Huahine. The Austral and Marquesas Islands are two of French Polynesia’s other administrative subdivisions. The Windward Islands are unusual administratively because they do not form a separate deconcentrated subdivision of the French Polynesian government, despite being one of the territory’s five official administrative subdivisions.
