On which mountain did the Ark come to rest in the Genesis account?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:4 uses the plural expression “mountains of Ararat,” rather than naming one specific summit.

Ararat is commonly associated with the region of ancient Urartu in eastern Anatolia and nearby areas. Mount Ararat, the prominent volcanic peak in modern eastern Turkey, later became the best-known candidate in popular tradition, but the biblical wording does not explicitly say that the Ark landed on that particular mountain.

This distinction explains why “Mount Ararat” is a familiar shorthand while “the mountains of Ararat” is the more precise biblical answer. Numerous expeditions and reported sightings have claimed to find the Ark, but no discovery has been scientifically accepted as proof of the biblical vessel.
