On which island did Napoleon Bonaparte die in exile in 1821?
Answer
Saint Helena
Answer
Saint Helena
Napoleon Bonaparte died on the island of Saint Helena in exile in 1821.
After escaping Elba and suffering defeat at Waterloo in 1815, Napoleon surrendered to the British. Britain sent him to Saint Helena, a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic, to prevent another return to European politics. He lived at Longwood House under strict supervision.
Napoleon died at Longwood on 5 May 1821, aged 51. Historians have long debated the exact medical cause, although stomach cancer is widely accepted; arsenic poisoning has also been discussed. His remains were later returned to France in 1840 and placed in Les Invalides in Paris.
Saint Helena is a British Overseas Territory and should not be confused with Elba, the Mediterranean island where Napoleon spent his first exile before returning to France in 1815.
