On which day of the second month did the Flood begin around Noah’s Ark, according to Genesis?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Flood began on the seventeenth day of the second month.

Genesis 7:11 dates the start of the Flood precisely. It says that, in Noah’s six-hundredth year, on the seventeenth day of the second month, the fountains of the deep burst open and the windows of heaven were opened. Noah and the animals had already entered the Ark.

This date should not be confused with the date when the Ark came to rest. Genesis 8:4 gives the seventeenth day of the seventh month for the Ark’s resting on the mountains of Ararat. The text therefore supplies two separate seventeenth-day dates, five months apart in its calendar framework.

The account also gives Noah’s age in the surrounding chronology, but the date itself is the distinctive detail here. Translations may differ in how they render month names because Genesis uses numbered months rather than the later familiar Hebrew calendar names.
