On which console did the original Spyro the Dragon first release?

The story behind the answer

The original Spyro the Dragon first released on the PlayStation.

Insomniac Games designed Spyro the Dragon specifically for Sony’s original PlayStation, whose hardware made the game’s colorful 3D platforming possible. It was released in North America on September 9, 1998, followed by a European release on October 23 of the same year. The game was not originally launched on the Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, or Nintendo 64.

One of Spyro’s technical achievements was its ability to display large, open environments with unusually long viewing distances. Insomniac programmer Alex Hastings developed a panoramic engine using changing levels of detail, allowing distant objects to be rendered efficiently within the PlayStation’s limitations. This supported Spyro’s glide mechanic and made exploration feel more expansive than many contemporary console platformers.

The game’s PlayStation debut helped establish Spyro as a major Sony mascot alongside Crash Bandicoot. Its direct sequels—Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon—also first appeared on PlayStation. The original was later remade in Spyro Reignited Trilogy for newer systems.
