Metallica’s The Black Album reached number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States.
The Billboard 200 ranks albums and extended-play releases using consumption data, including sales and later forms of listening activity. Reaching the top of that chart demonstrated the album’s impact as a complete release rather than merely the success of an individual single.
The album’s songs also performed on singles and rock charts, but those are different measurements. “Enter Sandman,” for example, reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album itself topped the Billboard 200. Keeping those chart names separate prevents a common mix-up between album and single achievements.
The Black Album’s chart success accompanied a major stylistic and commercial expansion for Metallica. Its polished production, concise songwriting, and sequence of widely played singles helped the band move from a leading thrash-metal act to one of the world’s biggest rock groups.
