On what date was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer released in the United States?

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was released in the United States on July 21, 2023.

The release date placed the film on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, creating the widely discussed “Barbenheimer” cultural event. Oppenheimer is a historical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the first atomic bomb during the Manhattan Project.

Universal Pictures distributed the film, which Nolan wrote and directed. It stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh in major roles.

The date is sometimes confused with international release dates, since the film opened in different territories around the same period. Its United States release was specifically July 21, 2023, and it became Nolan’s highest-grossing film at that time.
