On what date was A. A. Milne’s book Winnie-the-Pooh first published in England?

The story behind the answer

A. A. Milne’s book Winnie-the-Pooh was first published in England on 14 October 1926.

Methuen & Co. issued the English edition, while E. P. Dutton published the book in the United States. The volume collected stories about an anthropomorphic teddy bear and his friends in the fictional Hundred Acre Wood.

The book followed Milne’s earlier poetry collection When We Were Very Young, published in 1924. Its characters drew heavily on the stuffed animals belonging to Milne’s son, Christopher Robin Milne, although the literary versions were developed by Milne and illustrated by E. H. Shepard.

A common mix-up is between the book’s publication date and Pooh’s earlier appearances. The character appeared by name in a Christmas story in 1925, but the first full Pooh story collection arrived the following year. The 1926 book sold 150,000 copies before the end of its first year and became the foundation of the wider franchise.
