On what date did the original Xbox launch in North America?

The story behind the answer

The original Xbox launched in North America on November 15, 2001.

Microsoft entered the home-console market with Xbox after developing technology around a Windows-based gaming platform. The console used a 733 MHz Intel Pentium III processor and included a built-in hard drive, features that distinguished it from many competitors at the time.

The launch took place in North America before the Xbox reached Japan in February 2002 and Europe and Australia in March 2002. Halo: Combat Evolved was the console’s major launch game and became closely associated with the system.

A common mix-up is confusing the original Xbox’s North American launch date with the Xbox 360’s launch in November 2005. The original Xbox was discontinued in 2005 after selling more than 24 million units worldwide. Its successor, Xbox 360, expanded Microsoft’s online gaming strategy through Xbox Live.
