On what date did the Ark come to rest on the mountains of Ararat?

The story behind the answer

The Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 gives this date after describing the waters’ recession. The wording is “mountains of Ararat,” a geographical expression rather than the name of one uniquely identified peak. The passage does not say that the Ark rested on the summit of the modern mountain commonly called Mount Ararat.

That distinction is important because later traditions and searches have often focused on a particular mountain in eastern Turkey. The biblical text’s plural wording leaves the precise location broader than that popular identification.

Genesis dates the event using the calendar of the narrative and Noah’s life. It also records that the mountain tops became visible later, on the first day of the tenth month. These separate dates show that the Ark’s resting and the full reappearance of the mountains were not presented as the same moment.
