On what date did the 2026–27 Premier League season open with a league match?

The 2026–27 Premier League season opened with a league match on 21 August 2026.

The first fixture was played on Friday 21 August, when Arsenal hosted Coventry City. That match began the season before the remaining opening-round fixtures took place from Saturday through Monday.

The date is distinct from the opening weekend’s busiest day, Saturday 22 August, when five matches were played. Sunday 23 August also featured three fixtures, while Fulham and Chelsea completed the round on Monday 24 August. This spread meant the opening round lasted four calendar days rather than being confined to Saturday and Sunday.

The 2026–27 campaign was scheduled later than some traditional Premier League starts because the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place during the off-season. The season was the 35th Premier League campaign and the 128th season of English top-flight football overall.
