The 2026–27 Premier League season began on 21 August 2026.
The opening fixture was played at the Emirates Stadium, where defending champions Arsenal hosted newly promoted Coventry City on Friday evening. Arsenal won the match 3–0, beginning their title defence with a convincing home victory.
The season started later than many recent Premier League campaigns because the 2026 FIFA World Cup was scheduled during the summer. The league calendar therefore opened in late August rather than in the middle of the month.
The opening weekend ran from Friday 21 August through Monday 24 August, with ten matches spread across four days. Arsenal and Coventry played first, while Fulham and Chelsea completed the round in a west London derby on the Monday.
