Metallica recorded four early demos for songs later associated with The Black Album on August 13, 1990.
The demo session took place at Lars Ulrich's home studio, known as The Dungeon. The four songs were “Enter Sandman,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “Wherever I May Roam,” all of which became important parts of the album's development.
This session occurred before the main recording period at One on One Recording Studios, which began in October 1990. The demos gave the band an early framework for arranging the material and helped document the songs before the extensive production process with Bob Rock.
“Enter Sandman” was the first song written among the group, but it was the last of those four demos to receive lyrics. The dates are easy to mix up because the album's formal recording period lasted from October 1990 until June 1991.
