On what date did Metallica begin recording The Black Album at One on One Recording Studios?

The story behind the answer

Metallica began recording The Black Album at One on One Recording Studios on October 6, 1990.

The sessions took place in Los Angeles and continued for roughly eight months, with the recorded period ending on June 16, 1991. The band also spent about a week at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver, while additional overdubs and mixing were completed at A&M Studios in Hollywood.

The lengthy process reflected the group’s high expectations and frequent disagreements with producer Bob Rock. Metallica wanted a live, unified band feel, rather than constructing every rhythm part separately as it had often done previously. The sessions ultimately produced the slower, heavier, more polished sound associated with the album.

Several nearby dates are easy to confuse. Four demos were recorded on August 13, 1990, and a “Sad but True” demo followed on October 4. Those were preliminary recordings, not the official album sessions that began on October 6.
