On what date did Facebook announce its parent company would be called Meta?

The story behind the answer

Facebook announced that its parent company would be called Meta on October 28, 2021.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed the new corporate identity during the company’s Connect conference. The rebrand separated the parent company from the Facebook social-network product and emphasized Meta’s long-term focus on building the metaverse.

The corporate name became Meta Platforms, Inc., while Facebook remained the name of the company’s flagship social-media service. The company also introduced a new infinity-inspired logo and began organizing its business around products such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and virtual-reality devices.

The announcement is sometimes confused with the date the name legally took effect. Meta Platforms began trading under the ticker symbol META on June 9, 2022, after previously using FB. The October 2021 announcement was the public reveal of the new corporate direction and name.
