Answer
April 16, 1972
Apollo 16 launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 16, 1972, for its lunar mission.
The Saturn V lifted off from Launch Complex 39A carrying commander John Young, command module pilot Thomas Mattingly, and lunar module pilot Charles Duke. Apollo 16 was the fifth mission to land astronauts on the Moon and the first to explore the Descartes Highlands.
Young and Duke landed on April 21, five days after launch, while Mattingly operated the command module Casper in lunar orbit. Apollo 16 returned to Earth on April 27, 1972. Its launch date is sometimes confused with the landing date because both are prominent milestones in the mission timeline.
