Nuku'alofa is located on which coast of Tongatapu?
Answer
North coast
Answer
North coast
Nuku'alofa is located on the north coast of Tongatapu.
The Tongan capital sits along the northern shoreline of Tongatapu, the main island of Tonga’s southern island group. Its position helped make it a natural administrative and maritime centre: Nuku'alofa has the island’s only deep-water harbour, which supported its development as the capital.
European visitors recorded the bay before the modern city took shape. Captain James Cook anchored there in 1777, while later missionaries and writers used several spellings of the name because a standard Tongan alphabet had not yet been established. Christian missions helped transform the settlement into Tonga’s political and religious centre.
Tonga’s 1875 Constitution formally established Nuku'alofa as the capital. The city’s north-coast location can be confused with the south side of Tongatapu, where Fua'amotu International Airport is located, roughly 34–37 kilometres away. Nuku'alofa’s waterfront, harbour and royal precinct all reflect its coastal setting.
